Lazing around in Panama

We left the hussle of Panama City yesterday, really congested , so much so it took us an hour to escape the clutches of the metropolis and head out to the highway. Another really hot day as we headed just north of Santiago to a nice "Eco Hotel" We stopped for lunch but the restaurant wasn't open so we had water instead, better for the diet!! The Hotel here has a pool so once again we are spoiling ourselves a bit. Today Sara and Dan from www.worldwideride.ca joined us, after a morning exploring the jungle?? around the hotel we spent the afternoon drinking beer and swappng stories, perfect really!
One bit of high drama was when a woman started shouting at us, "rapido rapido" turned out her husband was in the pool and was obviously in difficulty thrashing around, I thought it was a kid drowning but it was him, Fiona & Gianni were in the pool in a flash and helped him to the side  and to safety before I had to get wet!! So a bit of excitement for the afternoon!!
Not a bad place to spend a couple of days

Goodbye Colombia, hello Panama

It was with a certain amount of sadness we left Colombia and of course the South American Continent, South America has been fantastic, Colombia the jewel in the crown, We were lucky enough to stay at the Habitel Hotel where the concierge Eliana was excellent, going beyond the call of duty to deliver a great experience, thanks Eliana!
The flight to Panama was not without its issues, we got some grief because according to the check in girl we couldn't go to Panama without an exit ticket, trying to explain our bikes were there and we were riding North to Costa Rica seemed to confuse them! Finally after much consultation and showing of documents we got to board the flight.
Panama was a shock temperature wise, from a chilly 18 -21 degrees in Bogota to a very hot and humid 35 Degrees C in Panama. The hotel we are in is only a couple of Miles from the airport, its quite expensive and until now couldn't provide a decent wifi connection hence my lack of Comms.
Today we extricated the bikes from Panamanian Customs, all done in 2 1/2 hours of which most was the issuing of the temp import papers we need. This afternoon a trip into the huge metropolis that is Panama City to get insurance (expensive) and to see the canal, specifically the Miraflores Locks (impressive) so another busy day, just had a last wine by the pool, still hot and muggy under the palm trees so not all bad!
The lovely and helpful Eliana

Bogota

We left Salento at 8 am on Monday morning and glad to say the small road back to the highway was empty, remember this is the road that took over an hour to do two miles on Friday, we had good directions from Edward from the Plantation hostel (well recommended if you are in the area) and turned of Eastwards just before Armenia towards Calcara, a short stop for fuel and then over the Andes again to Ibague, the road twists and turns over the mountains, hairpin after hairpin, roadworks after roadworks and nose to tail with diesel belching trucks, fantastic scenery but to be honest you need to keep your eyes on the road and your wits about you all the time so little time to watch the scenery. At some of the hairpins the road has been widened to let the huge trucks pass in opposite directions without touching but of course the locals see it as an extra lane so they end up 3 or 4 abreast on these corners, complete madness! We reached Ibague and the road got better, it was then Dual carriageway most of the way towards Bogota, approaching the city from around 20 miles away it got busier and busier as you would expect from a city of 8 million people, into the city on very congested and mental roads before turning North towards the airport, I think we were all glad to see the hotel!
Tuesday we arrived at Girag's office before 8am where we were met by the very helpful Paola who guided us through the paperwork and various offices we needed to visit to get more paperwork issued and signed (if you are doing this trip Barcelona Pat has got a very detailed and accurate description of the procedure on his site, cheers Pat!!) By Noon we were almost done, then the Police, they told us it would be 2pm when they could come to inspect the bikes, it turned out to be 4pm before we started!! By this time as you can imagine we were very weary! Then Mr policeman asked us to strip the bikes, all the luggage , tent, sleeping bags, dirty washing had to be laid out for his inspection, I can understand why I suppose. By this time even the ever helpful and smiling Paola was getting fed up, by 5.15 we were done, over 9 hours!!
The Girag staff were very helpful and like I say most of this time was down to waiting for the police, some further hassle from a jobsworth security guard ensured I left the compound in a bad state of mind, two bottles of red in the restaurant later sorted that though.
In theory our bikes fly to Panama City tomorrow morning, we fly in the afternoon and then hopefully we can extricate them from customs Friday morning, the adventure continues!
The Plantation house hostel, well recommended

Sunset in Salento

Stop for a fluid break after Ibague

Relieved after the very busy ride through Bogota!

Outside the Girag office

The beginning of the process, first the bikes into the warehouse up a very steep wooden ramp, stunt riding!

Waiting, waiting , waiting, boring, boring, boring,

So tomorrow we will leave South America, we will both be sad about that, it is a fantastic Continent with fantastic people and we have been lucky enough to meet many of them, Colombia has been one of my favourites, the people are so friendly and helpful and I'm sorry we don't have more time to spend here, that has to be said for all of the counties we have visited here , friendly people and great scenery, except for Peru I'm afraid, its the only country I wouldn't hurry back to for various reasons.
By the end of this week we will be starting North in Central America, all roads leading to the Moon!

Still in Salento

Yesterday we had a vist and tour around a Coffee farm, very interesting, I never realised how labour intensive coffee making is, the coffee beans have to be hand picked which isn't the easiest, seemingly its better to pick them in the rain, then they are seperated from the outer shell, they are then fermented (to get rid of the sugar) after that they are dried and the inner skin removed then roasted before they are ground to make your coffee. After seeing the process and how little the farmers get per Kilo I hate the big coffee chains more, Starbucks and Costa have seen the last of my money!
It was great to sample to finished product but I could have done with some sugar! A walk around the farm felt like we were in the jungle in parts, plenty creepy crawlies going around, on the path back to the hostel we spotted a huge spider , turned out to be a Tarantula, must admit I was careful putting my shoes on today!
Salento is a really nice town and its a great place to chill out an people watch, yesterday one of the girls on the tour was from Cork but didn't know any of the reprobates we do and then last night we were speaking to a girl who was born in Perth but left before she could develop the accent, small world as always!
The original plan was to leave for Bogota today but seemingly most of the 8 million people on vacation from there will have the same idea so we go tomorrow hopefully, Werner and Claudia left for Medellin this morning so its probably the last time we will see them on this tour as they head for Cuba.
