The route as always on these trips is work in progress, we land at Buenos Aires at the end of November and after picking up the bikes we are heading for a travellers meeting (bike rally) at Viedima in the South, then head for Ushuaia the most southernly city in the world for Christmas and New year. After that its North for a good while, I'll try to update routes as we go (if I can)
The first part will look like this;
And the plan at the moment is to do this;
Hi Gino,

Hi Guys, just laughed my socks of at your latest blog. Hope you're both enjoying yourselves and the flies haven't put you off your grub. Noticed your wine had a cork in it, that would never happen in our house.
ReplyDeleteride Safe, Colin & Jackie (Forth Gear)
Its been a blast so far! The cork was to stop the flies drinking it. Sair going some days but brilliant, Thanks for the comments

So there I was in the middle of Estes Park, a veritable local, with a crippled GS1000 and gasoline from an inadvertent overfill expanding in the sun and running across the parking lot. What a mess. It was so extreme that the manager had me remove the tank to the shade since the motorcycle wouldn't run. Just when I most needed an ally along came Fiona, enough to brighten anybody's day all by herself, but with the incredible offer of expert assistance coming all the way from Scotland via Argentina in the name of Gino!
ReplyDeleteNow I normally draw the gas down rapidly enough to prevent expansion problems but there was no way I could keep that thing running. I was about to venture into never-never land with speculations about coils, points, and other things that were unlikely to fail in the gas station driveway when Gino set me straight "It's in the carbs!". Thank you, it was, literally...
Anyway after reassembly it started, popped, spit, and argued for a while then smoothed out and zipped on home like the striped ape it has always been (I was afraid to slow down). I remain clueless but I sure did enjoy the company and what little I heard of your trip while we were troubleshooting. Of course I'm on the blog now where I can read all about it.
OMG! I was just about to write the whole thing off to space aliens when it occurred to me that I was trying to burn water that had doubtless entered the carbs when I switched to reserve coming into town. Worse, I remember how it got in there and that no one is to blame but myself. I hate that.
Now it all makes sense because, as you will recall, I had removed the bowl screws from two carbs and found them full (but I hadn't bothered to check on what they contained!) Hence the popping and spitting while those two carbs (refilled with gasoline when I reinstalled the tank) supported the engine and the other two cylinders tried to burn water. As our comic Ron White says, "you can't fix stupid". With age comes the wisdom of experience — too bad I'm too old to remember all those tough lessons when I need them.
Please forgive my long-winded post but I thought you might find it interesting after your involvement and especially after the Eureka moment. As we agreed, it's all about the story and mine has another chapter made much more interesting for having met the two of you and hearing of your fantastic adventure, a few Norton's and a 'Guzzi. So it's all good.
May the rest of your trip be the stuff of dreams, you have "payed it forward" and deserve it.
...and good luck in Mongolia, whenever...
Hi Ron
DeleteGood to meet you the other day and thanks for letting me know what the issue was. Sorry I didn't wait around till you got going but glad you did. Still in Estes Park until tomorrow morning, currently in the KOA site, camping. Hope the old Suzuki gives you many more years of faithful service
Regards
Gino & Fiona

Hey Gino, as with John B, Dave Moore passed on your blog details. Looks like you're having a fabulous time...I'm jealous. I checked out your route and I see you're not heading 'down under' (Sydney), which is a shame. We've all been reminiscing about the Fair City MCC with Alistair posting photos and Dave getting the group up and running...all good fun. I just bought a new MV Agusta...you won't like it as it's not a Norton! I trust you're well. Ride carefully and look after each other. Lynne (Evans) xx
ReplyDeleteHi Lynne, good to hear from you, it's a great trip, sell the MV get a adventure bike and join us. No Sydney this trip. Keep in touch
